THIN LINE

Tony Vaughan
There is a
thin line
between an insult
and a threat.
People eat
mostly
out of fear.
never trust
a professional
to be more connected than
you think
                 you are.
          Did you know
          that punishment
          perpetuates
          the problem
          of crime?
And that
          affection always works
          but it might take
          a long time?
          Ah -- we are
         humble when
        we are sad.
         April moon
         singing in its
         dense cloud
        of good luck.
Check it out.
         Your ordinary
         way of living
         might be
         Heaven
         to
                  somebody
                                             else
.

WHAT MONK SAID

Bob Booker
'Ain't that a bitch"
ftom San Juan Hill
to New York City
and Minton's Playhouse
in the good old Be-bop days
with Dizzy & Bird
Hawkins & Rouse
at the Village Vanguard,
"the first take
is where the feeling is,
that's the challenge,
to get it right the first time",
depression & euphoria
all in the same breathe,
"pick your spot.
just pick it"
is what Monk said,
hit any of em,
hit any notes you want"

TO DIDO DYING

Kirby Doyle

Consider---a house, a hillside,
a large sunny box clutched in stillness,
opened in all directions--

softly Satie, & the Sung dynasty
rising across the window,
the day so bright the glass near breaks
with its warmth

Consider---a room, a house, a large sunny box
into which we put things
ourselves, beauty, love
opening in all directions.
